A dynamic coastal capital, a tropical climate and miles of wild Atlantic beaches – Angola has it all. More than a quarter of the population live in capital Luanda, where modern skyscrapers soar up from palm-fringed ocean boulevards. Home to an international business community, the northwestern city buzzes with a cosmopolitan, future-facing atmosphere, as well as vibrant dining, sports and art scenes. Evocative fragments of the past, meanwhile, live on in the buildings of the old city, Baixa de Luanda – including Portuguese-style cathedral Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (Our Lady of Remedies), built in 1628. Beyond Luanda and into wider Angola, truly pristine wilderness awaits, from the atmospheric cliffscapes of Miradouro do Lua to the south of the capital, to the near-endless sandy beaches in the country's far south.
