Duomo di Milano – A Masterpiece in Marble

Of all the architectural marvels Milan has to offer, none is as intricate and beautiful as the Duomo di Milano. Commissioned by the Visconti family in 1386, this extravagant cathedral is the largest in Italy. It took nearly 600 years to complete, with the finishing touches added as late as the 1960s. Made entirely of gleaming white marble, the cathedral exterior is adorned with 135 spires and over 3,000 statuettes. The interior meanwhile is lit by three colossal stained glass windows. Visitors can walk under the cathedral's lofty vaults or take in breathtaking views of the city through the spires on the Duomo's rooftop.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II – Milanese Shopping in Style

Milan is the Italian capital of fashion and style, which the celebrated Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II showcases perfectly. Opened in 1877 this beautiful space is Milan's oldest shopping arcade. The street runs under an elegant construction of glass and iron, forming arches and domes that protect the four stories of shops beneath. Nicknamed ‘the city's drawing room', the Galleria has stood at the centre of Milanese life for over a century and is a popular meeting spot thanks to its abundance of bars, restaurants, and boutiques selling everything from jewellery and clothes to antiques.

Pinacoteca di Brera – Milan's Finest Art Collection

Located above one of Italy's most prominent art schools, the Pinacoteca di Brera gallery houses Milan's finest collection of art, complete with notable pieces from the Old Masters. This gallery has been separate from the school since 1882 and is now a dedicated public gallery. Many of the gallery's pieces found their way here during Napoleon's Italian conquests, having been transported from Venice and other major cities. Inside you can admire pieces by Italian masters such as Caravaggio, Titian, and Bellini, as well as pieces from elsewhere in Europe. Teatro alla Scala – Milan's Opera on the World Stage

The Teatro alla Scala ranks among the most famous opera houses in the world and has held performances by many of the world's finest singers and dancers. Built on the site of a former church, this neoclassical building was opened in 1778 and has sat centre stage in the world of Italian opera ever since. At La Scala, the programmed season of opera and ballet begins in December and lasts until July, but the venue also shows theatre and classical music throughout the year, barring a short recess in August.
