Sometimes the road less travelled is the most rewarding – and Moldova is undoubtedly that. The capital Chisinau (pronounced “keeshy-now”) boasts broad, willow-fringed boulevards, a thriving underground culture and a colourful café scene. Moldova’s real magic is the countryside, where thickly forested hills shelter ancient monasteries like Capriana and Saharna and archaeological sites like the beautiful Orheiul Vechi complex. Nature spectacularly asserts itself at the Padurea Domneasca National Reserve, which offers gentle hiking and the opportunity to get close to red deer and European bison. You can also visit the wonderfully named Cave of Surprises, just one of Moldova’s many splendid subterranean curiosities. Gourmands will delight in Moldova’s burgeoning wine industry, with over 40 wineries sprinkled around the country.
