Doha – A jewel in Qatar's crown

A glitzy skyline, bustling souks and ancient history – welcome to Doha, the capital of Qatar. The cosmopolitan city is where Bedouin tradition meets modern charm. Go past the city's cloud-brushing towers, street-prowling supercars and high-end shopping centre for example, and you'll find the spice-laden Souq Waqif market, home to everything from clothes to shisha pipes. Culture buff? Head to the world-class Museum of Islamic Art or Doha's National Museum of Qatar. Mother Nature has worked her magic here, too. Sprawling desert surrounds Doha, but venture two hours outside of the city and you'll discover the UNESCO-listed Inland Sea. It's one of only three places in the world where the desert joins the sea. And it's home to a rare species of turtle, so keep your eyes peeled.

Barter for a bargain at Souq Waqif

This recently renovated labyrinth of traditional and modern shops and stalls has everything for every shopper, including spices, jewellery and textiles. Vendors are ready to bargain, so prepare to haggle and see if you can get some treasures for a song. Then, with shopping done, relax with some dinner and maybe a shisha from one of the many surrounding restaurants and cafés.
Museum of Islamic Art

Spanning three continents and over 1,400 years, this museum elevates Islamic art with engaging exhibits. Items on display include a seven-metre long Haji certificate from 1433 CE, 16th century Ottoman ceramics, 12th century Syrian glasswork, and several modern pieces from around the world. The museum's adjoining park contains a captivating sculpture garden with a family play area and café.
Katara Cultural Village

If you want to learn about Doha's local traditions, Katara Cultural Village is your go-to. This hub on the eastern coast was opened in 2010 to celebrate the winning of ‘Doha Cultural Capital of the Arab World'. It's home to everything from a handicraft souk and a book market to an opera house and libraries. That's not all, there are art galleries, coffee shops and access to a private beach, too. Watch famous names play in the amphitheatre here, before tucking into some tasty Middle Eastern food.
Shop at Villaggio Mall

You name it, Villaggio shopping mall in the west end of Doha has it. We're talking big-name brands such as Fendi, Valentino and Tiffany & Co. You'll also find high-street options like Zara and Mango. And clothes aren't the mall's only forte. Across a range of around 200 shops, you'll find top-brand furniture, home and electronics. When it's time for a break, you can find plenty of places to grab a bite to eat. The main attraction is probably the indoor canal, which runs through the centre of the shopping centre. Hop on a gondola-style boat and feel like you're in Venice.
