Azerbaijan – Land of Fire and Unique Architecture

Explore Azerbaijan, a remarkable country where the east meets the west. Visit the capital, Baku, and admire iconic architecture, both ancient and modern. The 12th-century Maiden Tower’s distinctive shape has made it a national symbol. Check out the Flame Towers sinuous trio of skyscrapers inspired by the ‘eternal flames', which are must-see features of the Azerbaijan landscape, or be dazzled by the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum’s startling resemblance to a rolled-up carpet. The ‘eternal flames’ are caused by natural gas seeping through the earth. Experience them on sites close to Baku: Yanar Dag (burning mountain) and Ateshgah Fire Temple. You may also witness Yanar Bulaq’s fire spring in Astara. Fans of architecture will appreciate the Palace of Shaki Khans at Sheki for the gorgeous shebeke glass mosaics, stained-glass windows and vivid frescoes that line its walls. Hikers and nature lovers will enjoy the awe-inspiring scenery of the Great Caucasus Mountains, Nohur Lake and Yeddi Gozel waterfall, all very close to Gebele.
